The Village of Pomona was formed on February 3, 1967. It is located partly in the Town of Ramapo and partly in the Town of Haverstraw in Rockland County, New York, located north of New Hempstead, east of Harriman State Park, north of Monsey and west of Mount Ivy. The village has about 3,000 residents according to the 2010 census. In Roman mythology, Pomona is the goddess of fruit trees, gardens and orchards.
Sports and entertainment
Pomona is home of the newly formed Rockland Boulders semi-pro baseball team. The Boulders were one of three new teams joining the Canadian American League for the 2011 season. All the major league sports venues of New York are less than an hour away by car.
Pomona is near numerous public and private golf courses. The principle public course is the Phillip Rotella Golf Course in the neighboring village of Rotella Golf CourseThiels. Registered Haverstraw residents can play this par 72, 18 hole course for $22 weekdays. Other nearby courses include the private Minisceongo Golf Club, and the semi-private New York Country Club in New Hempstead.
For boaters of all kinds, the Haverstraw Marina in West Haverstraw offers deep-water anchorages and 1000 slips for sail and motor boats. A newly renovated bar and restaurant offers fine dining, with outdoor seating in the summertime.
Pomona has three village parks, and is near many other parks, including Harriman State Park. Harriman State Park is the second-largest park in the New York State park system, with 31 lakes and reservoirs, 200 miles of hiking trails, miles of streams and scenic roads, and scores of wildlife species, vistas and vantage points. Also nearby are the Mount Ivy County Park, the South Mountain County Park and High Tor State Park. All offer hiking, scenery and spectacular views.
The Haverstraw Public Pool at Bowline Point Park has an Olympic size swimming pool with a wading area, two water slides, a newly re-designed toddler pool, a toddler playground, and a handicap accessible water spray area. The pool is open from June 20th thru Sept 7th, from noon until 7 p.m.
Pomona is near shopping and many dining establishments, including the Palisades Center Mall, and is 30 minutes from the Woodbury Commons Outlet Mall in Woodbury.
Pomona is minutes from two major New York highways: the Palisades Parkway (non-commercial passenger vehicle traffic only), heading north and south, and the New York State Thruway (Highway 87 and 287, heading east and west.

Haverstraw Ossining Ferry
During warmer months, one way to commute to New York City from Rockland and Orange counties is the ferry from nearby Haverstraw. The convenient high-speed Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry, Haverstraw.Ossining ferryoperated by NY Waterway, The ferry connects to the Metro-North Railroad station at Ossining and lets commuters get to the Grand Central Terminal in about 70 minutes.
The dock is located off Route 9W, north of the intersection at Riverside Avenue and Short Clove Road, at Dr. Girling Drive, in the Village of Haverstraw.
